Damage identification of structures using experimental modal analysis and continuous wavelet transform

Authors

Abstract:

Abstract: Modal analysis is a powerful technique for understanding the behavior and performance of structures. Modal analysis can be conducted via artificial excitation, e.g. shaker or instrument hammer excitation. Input force and output responses are measured. That is normally referred to as experimental modal analysis (EMA). EMA consists of three steps: data acquisition, system identification and modal parameter estimation. EMA, which is also known as frequency response function (FRF) testing, has been widely preferred for the modal parameter estimation of structures. The main objective of this paper is to determine the locations of damages by applying the wavelet transform to the measured mode shapes. The mode shapes are obtained from EMA by applying FRF of structure as the input data. In the present work, a two-stage method of determining the location of multiple structural damages on space structures is proposed. Firstly, EMA is applied to estimate the first mode shape of space structure by applying FRF as input data. In the second stage the mechanism of using 2D- CWT is applied by exploiting the concept of simulating the mode shape of space structure to a 2D spatially distributed signal for damage localization of space structure. Multiplicities of structural elements and joints are the main challenges related to damage detection of space structure. The validation of EMA is performed with modal assurance criterion (MAC). Seven numerical examples are conducted on two double layer diamatic domes with different sizes to assess the effectiveness of the proposed 2D-CWT method. The results demonstrate the reliability and applicability of the introduced method.

modal coefficients identification using wavelet transform

identification of damping parameter is usually more complicated and unreliable comparing to mass or stiffness identification in structural dynamics. there are many factors such as intermolecular friction, coulomb friction and viscous damping affecting the damping mechanisms in a structure. therefore it is difficult, and in some cases impossible, to describe the details of damping mechanisms by ...

gravity sources identification using continuous wavelet transform

introduction: wavelet transform is one of the useful and suitable tools for time series and signal analysis. nowadays wavelet transform is frequently used in geophysical data processing and interpretation, especially seismic data. however, the use of this method isn’t widespread in gravity and geomagnetic. fedi and quarta (1998), martelet et al. (2001) and de oliveira lyrio (2004) used the wave...

Simple Identification of Nonlinear Modal Parameters Using Wavelet Transform

Estimation of the modal parameters of mechanical systems or structures is usually achieved by applying the well-known Frequency Response Function (FRF) method to experimental data obtained from free vibration after a shock excitation of the system or forced vibration using a variety of excitation signals. This method is however limited only to linear systems. The problem becomes more complex wh...

On the use of continuous wavelet analysis for modal identification

This paper reviews two different uses of the continuous wavelet transform for modal identification purposes. The properties of the wavelet transform, mainly energetic, allow to emphasize or filter the main information within measured signals and thus facilitate the modal parameter identification especially when mechanical systems exhibit modal coupling and/or relatively strong damping.

Acoustic Emission Source Location in Steel Structures Using a Wavelet Transform Analysis and Modal Location Theory

Source location is an important feature of acoustic emission (AE) damage monitoring in steel structures. The ability to accurately locate sources can assist in source characterisation and early warning of failure. This paper describe the development of a novel AE source location technique termed “ Wavelet Transform analysis and Modal Location (WTML)” based on Lamb wave theory and time-frequency...

Identification of Flicker Source Using Continuous Wavelet Transform

In this paper, a method based on continuous wavelet transform is suggested for calculation of flicker power. The flicker power can be utilized to identify the flicker direction to a flicker source with respect to a monitoring point. In our proposed method, using continuous Gaussian wavelet transform, pure flicker waveforms are extracted from the measured voltage and current signals. The flicker...
